Ingredients
water
egg
flour (I use bread flour or ½ bread flour, ½ whole wheat but you can also use all-purpose for the whole recipe)
salt
butter softened or olive oil
sugar
yeast
Directions
- Mix flour, sugar, salt and yeast together. Mix water, egg and oil (if using). Combine with flour mixture. If using butter add at this step.
- Knead dough with a stand mixer and dough hook, food processor or by hand for 3-5 minutes.
- Put dough in a large, greased bowl and cover. Let rise for 2-3 hours.
- Turn onto a floured surface. Gently roll and shape into a 12” rope.
- With a sharp knife or dough cutter divide into 8 burgers or 12 hot dogs pieces.
- Grease a baking sheet. Roll pieces of dough into desired bun shape. Brush tops with melted butter or olive oil. Optional: add a sprinkling of sesame seeds.
- Cover and let rise for 15-20 minutes or until almost double in size.
- Preheat oven to 400. Bake 12-15 minutes.
Notes
- Dough can be frozen after the first rise. After cutting the dough, roll into balls and freeze on a cookie sheet cover with wax paper or parchment paper. After frozen store in a freezer bag until needed. Pull out the dough about 12 hours before needing and allow to defrost at room temperature (or put in fridge the night before to defrost). After defrosting and rising a little, do the shaping and rise part.
